Core Drilling | Core Sampling and Analysis

Understanding the Applications and Functional Aspects of Core Drilling

Core drilling is a way of obtaining samples from the ground or other surface and terrain types. These samples (also referred to as “cores”) are then analysed to ascertain information about the area. It is most commonly used in construction, mining, and geophysical research studies. Plumbers and electricians also make good use of core drilling, as it allows them to penetrate certain surfaces (concrete, for example) without heavily damaging the surrounding structure. In the article below, we will explain how core drilling works and examine its applications across several industries.

The Core Drilling Process

While we briefly explained what core drilling is in the introduction of this article, it is worth noting that the process is far more complex. There are several steps involved in such projects, from before a project commences until after it ends. Each step in the process is crucial to its overall success and is dependent on the steps before it and will have an impact on the steps after it.

This is how core drilling works:

  1. Planning – Before a project commences, it needs to be planned properly. Core drilling should be included in the planning phase, as it has the potential to determine the physical and economical viability of a project.
  2. Drilling – Once a site has been chosen for a big project, the site first needs to be inspected and surveyed to determine if the project can continue. That’s where core drilling comes in. It provides valuable information about an area, including rock and soil composition, the structural integrity of rock formations in the area, and the depth of certain geological formations.
  3. Sample Analysis – Once the cores have been extracted, they need to be analysed in a lab. This includes testing the density of the core, looking at cross-sections under a microscope, and testing its porosity or fluid saturation. These analyses can determine the presence of potentially dangerous geological formations like dolomite.
  4. Make Informed Decisions – After all analyses have been completed and a comprehensive report has been compiled, the information can then be used in a risk analysis to make an informed decision on whether a project should be continued. It is thus essential for surveys (including core drilling) to be conducted as thoroughly as possible.

The Applications of Core Drilling

Core drilling is versatile in its applications. In the construction industry (in addition to the abovementioned survey application), it is used to create holes that serve as passages for cables and pipes. In the mining industry, it can be used to detect and sometimes extract valuable mineral deposits; and in the fields of geology and hydrology, it is an indispensable method of analysing and studying the physical composition of an area, which may then be used to either further conservation goals or to serve as a guide for building projects in the area.
